Course Description:

This course teaches key mathematical concepts using the new Python programming language. The first part of the course teaches students how to use the basic features of Python: operations with numbers and strings, variables, Boolean logic, control structures, loops and functions. The second part of the course focuses on the phenomena of growth and decay: geometric progressions, compound interest, exponentials and logarithms. The third part of the course introduces three key mathematical concepts: trigonometry, counting problems and probability. Students use Python to explore the mathematical concepts in labs and homework assignments. No prior knowledge of programming is required.

Course Description:

In this course, students will learn to create applications for Apple’s iOS on both the iPhone and the iPad using Objective-C, Apple's new programming language Swift, and the iOS SDK. Since its introduction, the Apple iOS SDK has proved to be a powerful platform upon which to build sophisticated applications. Without actually having to own an iPhone or an iPad, students will be able to build and test their applications on Apple Macs using the freely available compiler and simulator, XCode. Students will become proficient in the object-oriented language Objective-C, Swift, Apple iOS Frameworks, and the XCode development environment. This is a new, dynamic, constantly-evolving topic, and students will be at the forefront a new technological advancement.

Course Description:

For decades, optimization has been a major ingredient in solving problems from science, engineering, medicine, and business, and the field's current liveliness is leading to successes in machine learning, systems biology, design, and many other fields. This course is an undergraduate-level introduction to important algorithms in continuous optimization, and will address both theoretical foundations and software implementation. The topics to be considered range across linear programming (optimization of a linear function subject to linear constraints), gradient descent and its stochastic relatives, and a variety of nonlinear constrained problems. Homework assignments will exercise mathematical and computational skills, and (depending on enrollment) students may complete an individual project on a topic of their choice.

Prerequisites: Computer Systems Organization (CSCI-UA 201), Calculus III (MATH-UA 123) and Linear Algebra (MATH-UA 140). Knowledge of multi-variable Calculus is necessary. Students should check with the instructor before enrolling. Students will be expected to write programs in Matlab.

Course Description:

Many of the top firms in the technological and financial sectors are using algorithmic problems as interview questions for assessing candidate skill. In this course we take this idea one step further and use algorithmic problem solving as way to hone programming skills. Students will use the material covered in the data structures and algorithms courses and learn new algorithmic techniques to solve challenging problems quickly. Each week will be devoted to a particular type of algorithm. Weekly problem sets will reinforce the lecture, and require students to implement their solutions in Java or C++. Students completing this course will be well prepared to participate in programming competitions such as the ACM Inter-Collegiate Programming Contest, TopCoder, and Google's Code Jam.

Prerequisites: Computer Systems Organization (CSCI-UA 201) and Basic Algorithms (CSC-UA 310). Students must also register for the Recitation section.

Course Description:

This course will cover basic concepts and design tradeoffs related to programming languages. The first half of the course focuses on functions, types, scope, storage management, exceptions, and continuations, with a heavy dose of Haskell. The second half covers object-oriented features and concurrency. We will conclude with a few special-topics in programming languages. The class also has a number of labs where students implement some of the language features discussed in class.
