The PAC Program

Applicants whose previous training does not qualify them for admission to the MS programs but who otherwise show aptitude for graduate study in computer science may be admitted on a conditional basis, with the requirement of successful completion of PAC (Preparatory Accelerated Course). The PAC program is a two-course sequence (part one, offered only in the fall, and part two, offered only in the spring) designed to fulfill the minimum prerequisites for beginning a master's degree program in computer science or information systems.

NOTE: Some prior programming experience is recommended for entry into this program.

There are two main paths into the PAC program.  One is by direct application as a non-degree applicant.

The second path is as part of a conditional acceptance into the MS program in either computer science or information systems.  In this instance, the admissions committee makes a determination that an application is acceptable, but the technical experience of the prospective student is inadequate to meet the demands of the required core courses in computer science.  Those admitted to the MS programs with the requirement to complete PAC are considered master's degree students while they are enrolled in PAC courses, although the credits for the courses do not count toward their master's degree.  Students who complete the two-course sequence and receive a grade of B or better in the second semester, and who also satisfy the mathematics requirement, are permitted to continue in the master's program.  Students who get less than a B in PAC I will not be allowed to register for PAC II.

It is recommended that applicants apply for their ultimate degree objective rather than for PAC even if they expect to be required to take these courses.  Successful completion of the PAC program as a non-degree student does not guarantee acceptance into the master's program.

International students should note that in order to qualify for full-time status, they will be be required, under advisement by the Director of Graduate Studies, to register for udergraduate computer science classes of level 200 or greater, graduate mathematics courses, and selectively chosen graduate computer science courses. The PAC and undergraduate courses would not be counted toward completion of master's degree requirements. Note that your visa document (certificate of eligibility, form I-20 or IAP-66) will state that you are in the Preparatory Course Program for the first year. Once they have passed the program (with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or better), they will be issued a certificate of eligibility for the master's program.
