I think that you’re not giving Nik’s argument enough credit. You seem to
grant that some strings are meaningful and others are not, and presumably
that the strings that are meaningful are either true or false. Certainly,
“S is not a true meaningful string” is a string, whether or not it is a
meaningful one. Now, let S denote this string. If, under this
interpretation of the symbol S, S is not a true meaningful string, then S
is a true meaningful string; contradiction. If S is a true meaningful
string, then certainly S is not a true meaningful string; contradiction.
There is nothing prima facie absurd about interpreting the symbol S as
naming that particular string, nor about inquiring whether that particular
string is meaningful given that interpretation.
