ENGL-GA.2957-1 Digital Literary Texts- Fall, 2013
Project #2: Building Your Archival Sites
Summary:
Build a literary archival website based on primary source materials.
Technologies required: Wordpress; customize with CSS; edit the HTML; customizing PHP; scanning and photographing; familiarity with MySQL.
After you source materials have Marion's approval, please begin building your Wordpress site. Each student will build his or her own site "from scratch" as it were on our teaching webserver. Please follow these guidelines:
- Students will each create his/her own database in MySQL to store the data.
- Students will each install his/her own Wordpress site for this project.
- Students will select a "theme" that best suits the needs for the given project; students are asked to then create a "child theme" to further customize the selected theme.
- Students will be asked to modify PHP scripts where appropriate (change the standard site footer to credit the Fales collection, for example).
- Images are to be made available to the user as both thumbnails and medium-sized; these specifications can be determined within the Wordpress interface. Students are encouraged to post additional higher-resolution images on their i6 sites outside of the Wordpress site and link to those images.
- Students are asked to present all of their images, metadata, narrative (contextualization), citations, bibliographic information and related scholarly materials using the pages functionality of Wordpress. Please review your site architecture (the navigation schemes or "menus") with Marion Thain.
- Students are asked to include one page on the technical details of the page (see Assignment #2 - Technical information).
We will continue our discussions in class on "problems and promises" - from both literary/scholarly and technical perspectives.
Please do not hesitate to see Deena or Marion outside of class and the lab sessions to review your work, ask questions, and further the goals of your site.
