The option « Logic and philosophy of science (LOPHISC) » of the master's program in philosophy at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne offers a rich program covering the following three domains:

1)	philosophy of science (general philosophy and history of science, history and philosophy of biology, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy and history of physics, and philosophy of cognitive science);

2)	logic (in particular model theory, set theory, proof theory, computability theory, logical foundations of computer science, and modal logic);

3)	epistemology (including philosophy of language and philosophy of logic).

This program is aimed at students with background in the following disciplines: philosophy, humanities and social sciences, but also natural sciences including life sciences, medicine, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. We are particularly attentive to the needs of foreign students. However, all classes are in French. The university requires proficiency in French of level C1, but it is possible to reach that level just before starting the classes. In light of your individual situation, you might be accepted even if your present competence in French is lower.

The department of philosophy of the University of Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne is one of the largest and most important in France. Moreover, the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015 has ranked the department 21st in the world and first outside the anglophone world.

Students at LOPHISC benefit not only from the general offerings of Paris 1, but also from the courses offered in our partner universities, for example the master's of cognitive science (CogMaster) at the École Normale Supérieure and University Paris-Descartes and the master's of logic, philosophy, history and sociology of sciences (LOPHISS) at the University of Paris 7-Diderot and École Normale Supérieure. Students have the possibility to apply for a joint master's program combining LOPHISC at Paris 1 and the master's program Language and Mind: Linguistics and Cognitive Studies at the University of Siena (Italy), where teaching is in English.

Each student chooses a curriculum adapted to her background and interests. A member of our faculty supervises the research of each student. The program prepares for the second year of the master’s program and for the PhD in philosophy, but also for a variety of professions at the interface between philosophy, the sciences and technology.

During their studies in the master's program LOPHISC, students are welcome to participate in all research activities of the affiliated research teams, in particular at the IHPST (Institut d'Histoire et Philosophie des Sciences et des Techniques). At the IHPST, research is structured around the following themes: 1) History of philosophy of science, 2) philosophy of biology and medicine, 3) logic, language, philosophy of mathematics, 4) philosophy of physics, scientific knowledge, unity of science, 5) decision, rationality, interaction, 6) logic, life and cognition.
