Dear Prof Davis,
I do not know if FOM takes advertisements for positions: in case it
does, perhaps you could announce this?

University of Wales Swansea
PhD Research Studentship in
Computability and its applications to mathematics and physics
There will be a 3 year EPSRC research studentship in Mathematics at
Swansea
associated with the EPSRC grant EP/C525361: Foundations of computing
with continuous data: algorithms versus experiments with physical
systems.
supervised by Prof. J.V.Tucker (Dept of Computer Science) and Dr
E.J.Beggs (Dept of Mathematics).
The project is concerned with the computability of mathematical
structures
such as functional analysis and differential geometry, and their
applications
to the computability of mathematical models of physical systems (e.g.
Hamiltonian or Newtonian mechanics). Furthermore, the project will
investigate physical foundations for computability theories.
Any candidate should have a good understanding of analysis,
functional analysis and possibly differential geometry. They should
have an interest in learning and applying ideas on computability and
logic to new areas.
We would like the studentship to start on or before July 2006. The
funding is at the standard EPSRC rate, with a little extra money for
travel. The grant will pay tuition fees for home (UK) and European
Union students only.
The student will join a research team at Swansea, including Prof.
J.V. Tucker, Dr. E.J.Beggs and Dr. J. Blanck and Prof. J I Zucker.
For further information, including details of the financial package,
please contact E.J.Beggs at swansea.ac.uk.
