To answer Colin McLarty's question about
the Ewald anthology, here is the information
from the note at the beginning of the selection
in Volume 2 of "From Kant to Hilbert."
The basic translation is that of George Bruce Halsted
of 1908 (reprinted by Dover), revised by Ewald.
The passages that were deleted by Poincare are enclosed
in square brackets, and the passages that were added
in "Science et Methode" are given in footnotes.
The deleted passages are all translated
by Ewald.
Ewald's anthology is really superb, and I recommend
it to all subscribers to FOM. It goes from Berkeley
to Bourbaki, without a single overlap with Van
Heijenoort's famous anthology -- something that shows
the richness of the literature of foundations of mathematics.
