Franklin Pacheco's story about the child misunderstanding `arbitrary'
ordering of procedures echoes the famous story of Littlewood giving a
lecture to a class of 6th formers at his old high school.

"Let x be an arbitrary real number..." Littlewood began.

A hand shot up at the back:

"But Sir, suppose x *isn't* a real number!".
