From JFK to Courant

From JFK Airport to Courant and other points in Manhattan

By taxi:

There is a fixed $40 taxi rate to Manhattan. Tip (5-10 percent) and tolls (about $6) are extra.
If you are coming to NYU area, the the toll can be avoided by asking the taxi to take the Williamsburg Bridge into Manhattan.

By bus:

Carey bus to Grand Central Station or Port Authority Bus Terminal (42 St). Costs about $10 (this is 1990 price). From Penn Station take A or C subway to W4th St close to Courant. From Grand Central Station take 6 subway to Astor Place. New Jersey Transit also runs busses from the airport to Port Authority Bus Terminal (42 St).

By subway:

Take the AirTrain from any terminal to Howard Beach Subway station. Costs about $6. Then take the A train (costs $2) in the direction of Manhattan. This can take you directly to West 4th Street Subway Station, from which you can switch to many subway lines.

But the shortest walk to 100 Bleecker Street is to transfer out of A train at Jay Street/Borough Hall Subway station in Brooklyn. Then you just wait on the SAME platform, but on the other side, for the F train to Manhattan. This will take you to Broadway/Lafayette Street Subway station. Once you get to the street level, you want to walk along Houston Street.
Houston Street runs east-west. Walk in the westward direction, along the north side of Houston street. You will cross Broadway (very busy), then Mercer Street (quiet), and about 100 feet later, find a foot path on your right. Follow that foot path, and take the first left on that foot path into a large open plaza area (with a green grounds in the center). One of the 3 tall apartment building around that plaza is 100 Bleecker Street, where we live.

Timing:

A cab takes at least 40-60 minutes. The A train alternative takes a little over one hour (but on weekends and late hours can be slower). The Carey bus + subway is also roughly one hour.
