CRITIQUE OF APPROACHES
- The single parameter (target complexity bound or
bound on distortion) is too coarse.
- The step MiMi-1 does
not take into account the original M0.
- Symmetry considerations not accounted.
- E.g., the top and bottom faces of a cylinder must
be simplified in a coordinated fashion.
- Techniques treats homogeneous objects
- E.g. each polygon has a color or a texture.
- Try to respect color boundary
- But can produce hybrid colors
- Topological invariance is not an absolute criteria.
- E.g., a line is a good approximation to a thin cylinder.
- NOTE: a line does have a minimal rendered width!
- E.g., two close and parallel disks should be merged.
- E.g., a disk can approximate a disk with a small hole.
- Interaction between surface and textures can
be considered.
