Internet Protocol (IP) Suite

• Most widely used protocol suite.
• IP= Internet Protocol (network layer)
• TCP=Transmission Control Protocol
• UDP=User Datagram Protocol
• Users usually do not interact with IP layer but TCP or UDP.
• Developed by ARPA in late 60's and 70's for the ARPANET, for research. In 1984, ARPANET splits off MILNET.
• Some standard applications based on this suite:

  TFTP	Trivial file transfer protocol	UDP
  Telnet	Remote login service	TCP
  SMTP	Simple Mail Transfer Protocol	TCP

• Other protocol suites: SNA (from IBM), XNS (from Xerox), OSI.
