Please remember to do this hw early rather than wait till the last moment. In view of the Jewish holidays, I will allow you to hand in the solution by Thursday midnite. --Chee ***************************************************************** PROBLEM R-2.5: -- you can systematically sort the list of functions by "insertion sort". That is, you maintain the sorted order of all the functions seen so far, and for each new function, you "insert" it into the list (using binary search, for example). -- alternatively, sort each row of functions, then "merge" two lists at a time until there is only one sorted list. PROBLEM R-2.6: -- You will need a pocket calculator to do this problem. (Note: if you write programs to do this problem, you need to take care that the big numbers do not overflow) -- To make life easier for you, let me say that I am mainly interested in the order of magnitude. It is enough it you write your answers with only TWO significant digits, in the following "scientific notation": d.d x 10 ^ e For example, 1.2 x 10^{2345} 3.4 x 10^{-10} -- If a number is too big for your pocket calculator, you can use well known tricks. For instance, if you want to take the natural log of a huge number N that is too big for your calculator, then you need to first write N as a product of two smaller numbers: N = N1 x N2. Then log(N)=log(N1)+log(N2). Often, such factors of N are easily obtained. -- The easiest row to fill in is the row labeled by "n". Do this one first. -- Next, rows "sqrt(n)" and "n^2" are pretty easy -- you only need to take the square and square root of the corresponding entries in the "n" row. -- The hardest rows are: "n log n" and "n!". Here, you basically need to do trial and error search. Of course, as computer science majors, you use binary search: if m=10 is too small, and m=100 is too big, then you try m=50 (or m=55), etc. -- HERE IS A BIG HINT FOR "n!": use the approximation log(n!) = n log(n) - n + o(n). Here, the logs are to the base e (natural log). You may ignore the o(n) term in your calculations. I will try to clarify. Define a PriorityQueue interface with the methods listed in section 6.1.3 (except with the simplifications described in the assignment having to do with using the strings as both elements and keys; i.e., you do not need minKey(), and insertItem() takes only one parameter). Define a class Heap which implements PriorityQueue, as described in section 6.3. (Notice that you could also implement a PriorityQueue with a sequence, as described in section 6.2, but this is not what you are asked to do for the assignment.) The Heap class should additionally have a method sort(), which is not part of the PriorityQueue interface. Notice that a heap is defined as a binary tree, but binary tree is itself an abstract data type (ADT) (see section 5.3), so it can be implemented in different ways, such as with a sequence (section 5.4.1) or with a linked structure (section 5.4.2). If we were to be completely rigorous about it, as the book is, then we would consider sequence to be an ADT which can be implemented in several ways, such as with an array or with a linked list (chapter 4). Since we want you to use an array, this is finally the end of the line for implementations, because an array is a direct language feature, and not an ADT, so it doesn't need to be "implemented". But for this assignment you do not need to be so rigorous. Within your Heap class you will just declare an array as an instance variable, and do manipulations directly on that array to implement the various methods in the PriorityQueue interface. So, your main program will read in a string s from the input, then call heap.insertItem(s), then read in the next string. When all the input has been read, it will call heap.sort(). The Heap class will probably also need a method (which could be private) called snapshot(), or something like that, which will print out the current contents of the heap to the screen, in the right location. The methods insertItem() and sort() will call snapshot() at the appropriate times, as described in the assignment. (This means that the Heap will have to know about the graphics context of the applet that created it--the "Graphics g" variable in the paint() method of Applet. There are different ways to do this. One way would be to have a Graphics instance variable g in the Heap class, then, assuming the heap is created and used in the paint() method of the applet, the applet can simply assign its own Graphics variable to the heap's Graphics variable. Or it could be set in the heap's constructor.) In other words (if I understand it right myself---no certainty) when repaint() is called, the program may just continue executing, and the repaint will happen some time in the future, after your program has done some other stuff. This is why I am suggesting that you put much of the program logic in the paint() method, since code within that method will just be executed in the normal fashion. So, I have rewritten my example to show you a way to deal with this. The new url for the directory is http://cs.nyu.edu/been/v22.0310-004/eg/hw5example/ I will explain the various methods, and what they do: init(): This is the method that is called when the applet is first loaded into the browser. I just create the array, set some colors, and create the url object that will be needed for reading the input. start(): This is the method that is called after init(), and whenever the browser returns to this page after visiting another. I open the input stream, and then mark the beginning, so that we can return to the beginning of the file and re-read it later. stop(): This is the method that is called whenever the browser leaves the page to visit another. I just close the input stream. (So the idea is that the input stream is opened when the browser visits the page, and closed when the browser leaves. In between we will do the reading in the paint() method.) paint(): This is the method that is called whenever the applet needs to be redrawn to the screen, which could be after start(), or even just when another window that has covered up the browser is removed, so the browser is on top again. So paint() might be called several times without calling start() or stop(). That is why we will need to reset the input stream to read from the beginning. (An alternative would be to open it, read it, and close it, all within paint(), but that would be less efficient, and would make the paint() method longer and more confusing.) In paint(), I first reset the input stream so that we will read from the beginning of the file. Next I initialize some variables. Then, I go through a loop in which I read in a line, store it in the array, and print out the current contents of the array (by calling snapshot()). Notice that the calls to snapshot all happen during one execution of paint(), which means that they will be done in a predictable manner. You are welcome to use any code from this example. I suppose the parts on dealing with the input stream will be most useful. When you do the i/o methods, such as creating a URL and reading an input stream, you must catch the exceptions that the system throws, like I did in the example. I don't think there is any way to avoid that. You do not, however, have to invent any new kinds of exceptions. You do not have to throw any exceptions. None of the methods in your PriorityQueue interface has to throw exceptions. When I said that you don't have to do error checking, I meant that in the insertItem() and removeMinElement() methods you don't have to check for heap overflow or underflow---situations that would normally be handled with an exception. But then in other parts of your program of course you must make sure that those methods are called properly, so that the heap doesn't overflow or underflow. On the final exam, the scores ranged from 15 to 146 (out of 180), and the average was 73. The composite number grades for the class were computed by giving the following weights: final: 40% midterm: 20% homework: 6.5% each quiz: 2.5% each For example, for each homework assignment, divide your score by the total points possible, and multiply by 6.5. Do this for all the grades (count any "-1" grades as zero), and add them up, and you get a number out of 100. This is your composite score. The composite scores for the class ranged from 6.9 to 84.1, and the average was 48.8. I don't know how these will translate to letter grades. Ken
