Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,

---> The following email describes changes being made to the software
distribution of all ***Solaris-based Sun workstations***.
In particular, it includes the installation of a new Tex/Latex
distribution. If you're using a Solaris-based Sun, PLEASE READ
	THIS CAREFULLY.

Tomorrow, Friday, February 7th, I will be distributing a new version of
the Tex/Latex/AMStex/etc systems for the Solaris machines along with
several other software packages including:

Latex/tex:	Version 3.14159 of the teTeX (TUG-based) distribution.
nenscript:	A public domain version of Adobe's "enscript".
acroread:	Adbobe's Acrobat Reader version 3.0.
gopher: The lastest version of Gopher for Solaris.
Texspell:	Previously unavailable.
ispell: A properly functioning version of ispell for Solaris
bash: A patched version of the bash shell.

****************************************************************************
* To use the new Latex you MUST have /usr/local/bin ahead of /opt/bin
* in your path and you must execute the following shell command:
* 			setenv TETEXDIR  /usr/local/lib/teTeX
****************************************************************************

IMPORTANT NOTE: Another email will follow explaining how to use the
new Tex/Latex system, or how to revert to a prevous version in case
you find some problems with it. Please send all problem reports
to the both of the following email addresses: smosna@cs.nyu.edu and
chenli@cs.nyu.edu, NOT to comment at CIMS.

Matthew

Dear Faculty, Staff & Students,

****************************************************************************
* This email describes changes in the installation of Tex under Solaris. *
****************************************************************************

Version 3.14159 of the Tex system, along with all the new specialized
packages such as Latex, AMSTex, etc will be installed on all Solaris
Sun workstations tomorrow evening (you can tell if you are on a Solaris
machine if the command "uname -r" returns a number beginning with 5).
This version of the TeX system comes from CTAN (Comprehensive Tex
Archive Network), which is maintained by the Tex User's Group (TUG).

In order to use this new version of Tex you *must* do the following:

-- Add the following to your .cshrc (or equivalent) file:

		setenv TETEXDIR /usr/local/lib/teTeX

Note the spelling of the above carefully!
-- Make sure that /usr/local/bin is in your path ahead of /opt/bin.
Our standard .cshrc files do this, so you only have to worry
about this if you have modified our standard files.

This new installation of Tex does *NOT* remove the other version of Tex
that is located in /opt/bin. If you find that your Latex/Tex files do
not work with the new version you can alway revert to the old version
by making sure that /opt/bin is in your path *ahead* of /usr/local/bin.

Matthew
