setenv DISPLAY shasha:0

the two steps are:
1) on local machine $ xhost +remote.machine.com where
remote.machine.com should be the slinky.cs.nyu.edu if you use slinky;
so remote machine's display can be accepted

2) on slinky
$ export DISPLAY="local.host.com:0.0"
where local.host.com is the classroom machine's address
so that display will be forwarded to local

"This procedure assumes that you have some sort of X server (XFree86,
Exceed, Cygwin) already set up on the machine where you want to display
images. The architecture and operating system of the client machine are
not important as long as they allow you to run an X server on it."

Dear Dennis,

In order to run X programs remotely (say from griffin), the local machine
needs to have an X server running. We have an X emulator -- Hummingbird's
Exceed -- installed on the classroom PCs. Instead of using putty, you can
start a shell session using Exceed and run X programs from there. More
detailed instructions can be found in the following URL:

http://www.cims.nyu.edu/systems/platforms/windows/Exceed.htm#Exceed
