No, it should not be dangerous. To defrag the hard drive, you merely need to run
a defragger. Unfortunately, NT4 does not come with one, that means you would
have to purchase one or download one.

Win2000 does come with one. An alternative to purchasing a defragger is to
download the programs from the following:
http://www.sysinternals.com/contig.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/pagedfrg.zip
these do not defrag everything, but may be enough and they are free.

You would do contig -s *.* to defragment each of the files on your HD.
This is not very risky, but I would recommend backing up anything very important
before doing so. Then use pagedefrag.

Now that I think of it, you can also download the trialware version of Norton
Speedisk or Diskkeeper. These are full defraggers and will run for 30 days.
This is probably your best option.
You can find them here:
http://www.symantec.com/sdnt/index.html
http://www.diskeeper.com/downloads/survey.asp?PId=10
or for the freeware version:
http://www.diskeeper.com/downloads/survey.asp?PId=15

I hope this helps.
