Both relevant books are by tanenbaum. If you go to the prentice hall web page (just type ``prenhall'' to netscape) you find these listed
  1. Operating Systems: Design And Implementation, 2/e
  2. Structured Computer Organization, 3/e
  3. Modern Operating Systems, 1/e
  4. Computer Networks, 3/e
  5. Distributed Operating Systems, 1/e

Only 1,3,5 are OS books.

3 is the text for the prereq course 202 and is the official text for this course. Part I of 3 is traditional OS text. Part II covers dist OS.

1 contains part I of 3 plus LOTS of info on a specific OS called Minix. It is not relevant for this course.

5 is part I of 3 revised and expanded. It would be the ideal text for the course. For economic reasons I did not make it the text. Many students already own 3 and there is large overlap between 5 and part II of 3.
