888: New(?) kinds of questions

We present some new(?) kinds of questions, which may be impossibly
difficult, but if progress can be made, we suspect something of
serious interest would have to be done. So we are hoping that these
become seminal questions.

There are reasonably natural ways of listing all polynomials in
several variables with integer coefficients. Write P0,P1,... . We can
even allow small transfinite listings, some of which might well be the
most natural listings.

Now define the sentences Ai by induction. Suppose Aj has been defined
for all j <ij. Then define Ai = "Pi has a zero over Z" if PA + {Aj: j
< i} is consistent; "Pi has no zero over Z" otherwise.

PROBLEMS. For the most natural of enumerations, what can we say about
the union of the Ai as a theory, in terms of logical strength? How
does the strength vary according to the choice of natural
enumerations?

PROBLEMS. If we replace PA by EFA or by PA + Con(PA) or by PA +
Con(ZFC), how does that affect the union of the Ai as a theory, in
terms of logical strength?

For set theory, we offer somewhat different kinds of questions. We use
the sentences of set theory based on epsilon,=, with not, and, forall.
Use v,0,1 to present variables.

Say we want to decide between CH and not(CH). Let n be the smallest
number of symbols needed for a sentence to be provably equivalent to
CH over ZFC, and m be the smallest number of symbols needed to a
sentence to be provably equivalent to not(CH) over ZFC. How do n,m
compare? Similarly for any interesting sentence independent of ZFC.
