The following is quoted from the Notices of the AMS. It was called to my
attention by Dana Scott.

Michael Detlefsen, whose research in mathematics and philosophy focused on
the work of David Hilbert, died October 21 a week before his 71st birthday.
He received his PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1976 under the
direction of Dale Gottlieb and Stephen F. Barker, and was a faculty member
at the University of Notre Dame for 35 years. Detlefsen started the
university's joint PhD program in logic and the foundations of mathematics.
In a noticeposted by Notre Dame, Jeff Speaks, a colleague at the
university, wrote: "Notre Dame has been one of the best places in the world
to study the philosophy of mathematics for decades, and that is very
largely due to Mic’s importance and influence in the field. He has been a
leader in our department, and a mentor to students and faculty alike. It is
difficult to imagine the place without him."
