[FOM] "Hidden" contradictions

Are there any historical examples in which inconsistent systems actually yielded false theorems that could have made “bridges fall down” without anybody noticing the inconsistency?

I think more to the point is an inconsistent system which nevertheless constitutes a real advance in knowledge.  LW would point to Frege.  His point is pragmatic, and coming at it from a philosophy of science perspective not even terribly controversial, scientific theories being the product of flawed humanity.
