Point-free systems of geometry and topology are those geometrical and
topological theories which do not include the notion of point among
their primitive concepts. On the one hand, research within this branch
of logic and mathematics was initiated at the beginning of the XXth
century by Alfred N. Whitehead and Theodore de Laguna with the
aim to give intuitive foundations of Euclidean geometry. On the other hand,
Marshall Stone in his ground-breaking representation theorems for
Boolean algebras showed how closely related to each other are algebra and
topology.

Whitehead's and de Laguna's ideas gave rise to the so called
region-based theories of space, which aspire to describe spatial relations
by means of regions and relations holding between them: inclusion (parthood)
and connection. Stone's discoveries were the cornerstone of the theory of
frames and locales, which turned out to be very fruitful in establishing
properties of topological spaces. However, both approaches to point-free
theories of space are closely related to each other: regions have algebraic
properties which allow to reconstruct geometries and topologies, frames and
locales deliver tools which shed new light on mutual dependencies between
algebraic and topological properties.

We invite all scholars interested in the field to submit papers for
the special issue of Logic and Logical Philosophy devoted to point-free
systems of geometry and topology. We expect papers submitted to be related
to point-free geometry and topology via the following research areas:

* Contact algebras, connection structures, region connection calculus
* Foundations of geometry and topology
* Frames and locales
* Point-free metric spaces
* Modal logics of space
* Mereology
* Mereotopology
* Ontology of space
* Proximity spaces
* Qualitative theories of space
* Representation theorems for ordered sets
* Rough mereology
* Spatial logic.

Expected publication: Winter 2012/Spring 2013.

In case we receive a large number of high-quality papers we will publish
them in two parts in two different issues.
