This is not really a historical article, but rather a modern look at the 
idea, but I would nevertheless highly recommend William Cook's "On 
understand data abstraction, revisited", available at 
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/~wcook/Drafts/2009/essay.pdf [officially at 
http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1640133].

The bibliography is extensive, and cites all the classic works on the 
topic.
