TOPIC: HOW CAN INFINITE SET THEORY BE VIEWED AS AN EXTRAPOLATION OF
FINITE SET THEORY THROUGH THE ADDITION OF THE AXIOM OF INFINITY?

Here we present an alternative approach through what we call Single
Quantifier Comprehension. This approach has its advantages over
Existential Comprehension - particularly that the quantifier free
parts involve only epsilon, and =, and not inclusion.

We take Zermelo set theory to be: extensionality, pairing, union,
separation, and the modern axiom of infinity (using x union {x}). The
primitives are epsilon and =.

No epsilon cycles is the scheme

not (x1 epsilon x2 epsilon ... epsilon xk epsilon x1)

where k >= 1.

V(omega) is the set of all hereditarily finite sets.

1. SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R).

Let SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R) be the set of all single quantifier
comprehension axiom schemes in epsilon, =, R, where R is a schematic
unary relation symbol, that hold in (V(omega),epsilon).

I.e., we are looking at axioms

{x: (therexists y)(phi)} exists
{x: (forall y)(phi)} exists

where phi is quantifier free in epsilon,=,R that hold in
(V(omega),epsilon). We treat inclusion here as an abbreviation, and
not as a primitive. SQFIN(epsilon,=,R) is the set of all existential
comprehension axioms in epsilon, inclusion, =, and the unary schematic
relation symbol R, that hold in (V(omega),epsilon), where R is allowed
to range over all unary relations on V(omega).

For the purpose of logical equivalence below, we treat
SQFIN(epsilon,=,R) as a set of axiom schemes which require R be
appropriately subsituted by first order formulas in epsilon,=.

THEOREM 1.1. SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R) is logically equivalent to
extensionality, pairing, union, power set, separation, no epsilon
cycles.

COROLLARY 1.2. SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R) + Infinity is logically equivalent
to the following variant of Zermelo set theory: extensionality,
pairing, union, power set, infinity, separation, no epsilon cycles.

THEOREM 1.3. SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R) is decidable, and quite robust. E.g.,
we can replace all unary R by very simple R, or all "true" by provable
in various finite set theories. There are also combinatorial
characterizations.

2. SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R*).

Let SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R*) be the set of all single quantifier
comprehension axiom schemes in epsilon, =, and the binary schematic
relation symbol R, with functional hypothesis, that hold in
(V(omega),epsilon).
I.e., we are looking at axiom schemes

(forall x)(therexists unique y)(R*(x,y)) implies {x: (therexists y)
(phi)} exists
(forall x)(therexists unique y)(R*(x,y)) implies {x: (therexists y)
(phi)} exists

where phi is quantifier free in epsilon, =, R*, that hold in
(V(omega),epsilon). We treat inclusion as an abbreviation, and allow R
to range over all binary relations on V(omega).

For the purpose of logical equivalence, we treat SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R*)
as a set of axiom schemes which require R* be appropriately subsituted
by first order formulas in epsilon,=.

THEOREM 2.1. SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R*) is logically equivalent to
extensionality, pairing, union, power set, no epsilon cycles,
separation, replacement.

THEOREM 2.2. SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R*) + Infinity is equivalent to ZF with
no epsilon cycles replacing foundation.

THEOREM 2.3. SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R) is decidable, and quite robust. E.g.,
we can replace all binary R by very simple R, or all "true" by
provable in various finite set theories. There are also combinatorial
characterizations.

3. SQCFIN(epsilon,=,rel), ECFIN(epsilon,=,rel*).

SQCFIN(epsilon,=,rel) extends SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R) to incorporate
infinitely many relations of every arity.

SQCFIN(epsilon,=,rel*) extends SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R*) to incorporate
infinitely many relations of every arity with functional hypothesis.

In the first case, we get logical equivalence with SQFIN(epsilon,=,R).
In the second case, we get logical equivalence with
SQCFIN(epsilon,=,R*).
