FOM: 91:Counting Theorems

Let N be the set of all nonnegative integers. Let F:N^k into N and A
containedin N. We write |A| for the cardinality of A. We write FA for the
set of all values of F at arguments from A. We write
A below n
for the set of all elements of A that are less than n.
THEOREM 1. For all k,r >=1 and F:N^k into N, there exists an r element
subset A of N such that |FA| <= k^k(r^(|A below max(FA)|-r+k+1))+k^k. The
theorem is false if we replace k+1 by k, and/or if we replace the first k^k
by 2^k and/or we replace the second k^k by 2^k. We can bound max(A) by a
function of k and r only.
In light of this uniformity, we can restate this in purely finite terms.
THEOREM 2. For all k,r >=1 there exists n >= 1 such that the following
holds. For all F:[0,n]^k into N there exists an r element subset A of [0,n]
such that |FA| <= k^k(r^(|A below max(FA)|-r+k+1))+k^k.
Even more concretely,
THEOREM 3. For all k,r >=1 there exists n >= 1 such that the following
holds. For all F:[0,n]^k into [0,n] there exists an r element subset A of
[0,n] such that |FA| <= k^k(r^(|A below max(FA)|-r+k+1))+k^k.
THEOREM 4. Theorems 1 and 2 are not provable in Peano Arithmetic (PA). In fact,
they imply the 1-consistency of PA, over EFA (exponential function
arithmetic). The growth rate of the least n
as a function of k,r is just beyond the provably recursive functions of PA.
The same is true of the growth rate implicit in Theorem 1. Theorem 1 (both
forms) is provably equivalent to the 1-consistency of PA, over RCA_0.
