Just a footnote to the discussion of Frege's background and motivations:
William Demopoulos's new anthology, *Frege's Philosophy of Mathematics*
contains several papers describing Frege's mathematical background.  For
example, Mark Wilson's 'Frege: the Royal Road from Geometry' discusses how
Frege's work arose out of 19th century debates over projective and
complexified geometry.
