        1966-2004

I was a member of the Computing Systems Research Department in the Computing Sciences Research Center at Bell Labs. After I was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, my attention turned to the problems faced by those with cancer, and especially those with cancers that are not heavily researched.

Research interests in computer science

My research interests were in the performance of computer systems and I/O, especially systems that use disk storage. My work was aimed at using detailed knowledge of the storage system to improve the overall performance of the entire system. Some of my more recent work included storage outsourcing, web searching, storage of XML data, and file system performance. I have also worked on payment schemes, random bit generation, task scheduling for tape-resident data, analytic models of disks, parallel file systems, and algorithms for parallel I/O.
