Often for the purposes of computations we work with discretizations of continuous objects, but conceptually it is usually the continuous framework that has a physical interpretation. In this talk we ask the question: What are the continuous analogues of matrix factorisations? The answer we develop involves bivariate functions and an iterative variant of Gaussian elimination, leading to a test for a non-negative definite kernel and a definition for a triangular quasimatrix (a matrix whose columns are functions).
