Dennis,

Overall I thought the class was excellent - you teaching style, and candy, make the material very digestible.

My one comment would be on the pacing of the material, especially on day 3 - however, my assumption is that the smarties are designed as 1 per day, i.e. a 5 day class, that you had to compress to 3 days.

You might consider creating two separate courses; "q for beginners" which would cover just smarties til 3, and "q for developers" which would compress smarties 1 thru 3 into a single day (as a refresher, may be having a pre-requisite of having done the q for beginners, or at minimum having read thru the q for beginners material) followed by 2 days of the more complex smarties 4 & 5.

I think it was unfortunate that the class you gave had such a mixed audience, who were unable to attend 100%. I think the Reg-Tech people would have benefitted more from concentrating on "q for beginners", while the developers amongst us definitely got more out of the more advanced topics.

One area I would liked to have seen covered is interfacing and extending q with other languages, especially as we're not using q in isolation, but either providing services to other applications or are required to accept data from upstream systems were using files is not always feasible. But, I understand that this topic might be a whole 3 day case in and of itself.

I hope this feedback is useful to you.

This is my honest feeling about this class:

I have taken several q classes offered by first derivatives, from simple to advance and they were good, knowledgeable instructor with good pace. But class offered by Dr.Shasha gives you a completely different experience of learning q. It is not an easy language to learn, very different from other high level language like C+/Java. His whole approach is so unique, interesting and concepts are laced with audience appropriate examples, makes it fun to learn q. Three full days class and you won't feel it, credit goes to Dr. Shasha. No matter what is your experience with q prior to joining this class, you will be much more comfortable after this experience. One notable difference I found is that his approach is very academic not commercial. His interest is to teach you not just to fill his time sheet and go home. I really feel honored that I was fortunate enough to be in his class.

Thanks
Asif Gilani

Hi Dennis,
Hope all is well.

Scott Redstone is no longer with the bank, unfortunately we had many cuts over that period of time since your class.

I thought the class design was good, but I would consider these improvements:

- perhaps more in depth explanations and examples of the advanced features of q.

- types of data analysis that q is and is NOT a good candidate for.

- provide more programming problems, in increasing complexity, with the optimal answers in a hand out that can be worked on after the training.

- interoperability of q with other apis, frameworks etc..

That's it from my side, I hope this was helpful.

Regards,

Jeff

Hello Prof. Dennis,

I liked the way 'smarties' was structured with a good amount of emphasis on practice problems with varying complexities. I think this one is geared for people with already some exposure to kdb+ because Q being cryptic, people from traditional programming paradigm can take a while to warm up and write short scripts of high complexity.

May be splitting up the course into 2 parts could benefit you and the students. People would want to take advanced topics if they warm up to the abstruse concepts in the basics course.

Thx,
--N

Dennis,
It is good to hear from you. Again thank you for allowing
me to take the original class. After learning a bit of unix shell commands
and Python, I realized how accommodating you were with editing the speed of
the class. I owe you around 30 hours of private lessons, please reach out
at your convenience.
I think the first day we went through the Q syntax, which is
very impressive because it is clean and straight forward. I feel with the
breath of experience most of the participants bring to class, day one
should breeze through syntax and highlight ways to squeeze efficiency out
of it's very structure. Your experience is why people sign up and many
aspects of Q may seem straight forward to you today, but came about through
some eureka moment while solving a more complex issue as a consultant. By
using the small building blocks of the structure of Q to highlight
application solves implemented on past consulting jobs, would create an
attentive audience willing to share ideas on par.
Explaining the specific reasons the institutions wanted to
upgrade to Q would be helpful. How you made the switch to Q or altered the
current Q data base to meet requested requirements. Talking about the
process and the unanticipated issues that became present would be useful to
those contemplating similar implementation. The idea of a cut off switch,
using the additional time to granted by the speed of Q to compare
"identical" databases before confirming information while live. Allowing
for an in class discussion of other ways to solve for such issues.
I think that the large homework project was a great idea,
however those who could tackle that problem did not have the time or worked
on smaller projects a bit closer to hobbies they pursue, such as puzzle
solving. Discussing ways that Q would make winners out of different
institutions or why it has not been adapted by companies such as Bloomberg
would enable for a better grasp of the coming/present frontier of data
management.
The class could be tackled in two days and the third day
could be left for something like a hackathon day. We could work together
in class to tackle a problem found interesting by participants on the first
two days. With the experience everyone brings to the table I feel each
person could tackle a segment of a larger project and it could be checked
and linked together using remote ports by the main consultant.

Dear Colleagues,
In preparation for my next q for smarties class, I'd like to
solicit feedback about the version of the course you took.
If you have a chance, please send me your comments.
Warm Regards,
Dennis

Dear Asif,
I know you said you didn't mind, but I have edited slightly, because I didn't want to include the explicit comparison with First Derivatives.
So, could you take a look at this:
http://cs.nyu.edu/cs/faculty/shasha/qforsmarties.html
and see whether it is ok?
Best,

Hi,
I liked the format and the content. Too bad the few practitioners were very
tight lipped about their experience but I guess that's to be expected (also
guilty myself :)

Only other thing I missed was either a pointer for future self-directed
study or a preview of the next level course.
