Read more about the Amazon Theater/Tribeca Short Film Competition IMDb Movie of the Day Looking to duplicate the success of their 1962 box office triumph Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, stars Bette Davis and Joan Crawford reteamed with director Robert Aldrich two years later for the Southern Gothic thriller Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte (initially called Whatever Happened to Cousin Charlotte?). A role-reversal of Baby Jane, with Crawford tormenting Davis instead of the other way around, hopes were high for the new film. until Crawford developed a "respiratory ailment" three days into shooting, and effectively dropped out of the film. Desperate for a new lead to play the vicious Miriam, a northerner who returns to her family's dilapidated Southern mansion to "help" the loony (and wealthy) cousin Charlotte, Davis' old pal Olivia de Havilland was ultimately enlisted. Taking her place alongside Joseph Cotten (as the family doctor) and Agnes Moorehead (as Davis' slovenly yet devoted housekeeper), filming was reported to have gone smoothly, but no one could have anticipated the end results. Riotously campy where Baby Jane was bizarrely poignant, Charlotte embraced its Grand Guignol roots and squeezed hard, from its gory opening sequence (with a young Bruce Dern getting decapitated) to the sight of de Havilland slapping the lights out of a pigtailed Davis, whose Charlotte is something Tennessee Williams might have dreamed up after a too-spicy Creole dinner. On the strength of the movie's boffo box office, Davis campaigned hard for a 12th Oscar nomination, but the Academy only nominated the maniacally hilarious Moorehead, star of a new TV series called Bewitched, for the Best Supporting Actress award. - Mark Englehart (more) (Movie of the Day Archive) Please Meet Andrea De Oliveira Andrea De Oliveira has the role of "Eternity" in a short entitled Saving Neo, which purportedly is a cross between Finding Nemo and The Matrix. We can't vouch for Saving Neo but we can give rave reviews to Oliveira's agent because he used Publicity Photos Self-Service.
