Garment Based Twitter

the Hanker-'tude

Update your friends about your 'tude without having to log on to your computer or mess with texts on the go

the original again

it's much like the original, still not entirely insulated! but now it can be fat as well as wide

smaller magnets, and conductive alligator clips to allow it to connect to anything (moody-cuff on the way?)

anyone can use it!

the script is still limited to a single twitter update, in particular because the device still only has one recognized state

the lilypad may not be the best choice here because the guts of the device are removeable and it would benefit from being even smaller in size.

make the interaction btwn the user and their community less explicit by having sensors add information to their twitter updates (temperature, location, etc) and translate responses to those updates received via text as physical events on the device (a vibration or activation of an LED)

updates are gonna happen here: blogspot

Philosophy Behind Project

Having to interface continuously with a gadget to update your online presence is a drag on your real-life presence. Using a bandana/hankerchief instead is at least briefly amusing and requires only minimal setup typing.

Blueprint

Arduino -> Power Supply + Conductive Material -> BlueSMiRF -> Nokia N80 -> Twitter

Below is the first incarnation using the arduino deicimilla

Prototypes

Hankerchief attached prototype that uses Lilypad Arduino, conductive thread, and other connectors. (also includes N80/python and Twitter)

the electronics are attached to the main hanker using velcro - it can be re-attached to any variety of bandana designs to match the occassion.

Possible Future Implementations & Improvements

The construction and design needs to improve overall, but feature-wise:
- more contact points = more 'tudes
- make contact points independent of the hankerchief folds
- include connectors that stay with the scarf and have different wires live to express a new set of information when the electronics are snapped (and velcro'd) on.
- allow text msg replies from twitter to activate a buzzer motor (people have acknowledged your mood, has it changed because of that?)
- make a game of touching contact points in sequence, or communicate with combinations: IM-KERCHIEF!
- picture based 'tudes using flickr and the N80 phone camera.
- track variables like day/time, weather, light and chart against moods/'tudes; is there an interesting pattern?

- people suggested including a "panic button"
