    Open Source Program Kick-Off Event

    Friday, 24 September 2010, 05:00 PM

    @ WW 1302

Interested in learning about open source projects? Want to get involved but aren't sure where to start?

MACS has just the program for you! We have hunted far and wide to bring you open source project contributors who are ready, willing and able to meet with you on a regular basis to get you started on their open source projects and guide you to become active in the open source community.

Come to the MACS Open Source Program Kick-Off Event and help us choose this semester's project!

    Pizza served.

    Projects include:

    Democratize Innovation

Bug labs has modules which snap into a base Linux computer. This project will improve the software for one of the modules, the Von Hippel module. The von Hippel module, named after Dr. Eric vonHippel of MIT, is a breakout board. Focus will be on improving the API to include better ADC abstraction and API/I2C support.

Develop the official node.js driver for MongoDB

You'll be designing the API, implementing it, debugging it, creating a release, and, by the end of the semester, supporting hundreds of node.js users. Node.js is a fast, asynchronous server-side JavaScript implementation and this driver will allow node.js programmers to communicate with MongoDB. This project requires you to have some knowledge of C and at least an interest in learning JavaScript.

Have great technology ideas? Yeah, tons! Want to turn your ideas into money? Sure, but ... how?

Join your fellow students and MACS (Masters Association for Computer Science) for a rhetorical panel discussion about taking your business idea from 'your head' through business plan, financing, to a functioning business.

There will be a 1 hour discussion and Q&A session, followed by networking and pizza where you will have the opportunity to meet all the panelists and relax in the 13th floor lounge.

We have 4 panelists, all running their own technology startups in New York City:

The MintFinder engine is based on a combinatorial modeling platform that performs real time data analysis to deliver personalized product recommendations to individual consumers. One of their marquee clients is Novica.com - a web site owned by National Geographic that provides direct sourcing of unique crafts from artisans around the world.

    • Hilary Mason is a co-founder and CTO of HeadLamp Research which aims to connect researchers and participants through simple and powerful online research tools. Alexa graduated from Harvard University.

Some topics that will be covered in the talk:
    • How do I know if my ideas are viable money-makers?
    • How long does it take to make an idea profitable?
    • How much market research is needed?

    Hack Day: Unix 101

    Thursday, 08 April 2010, 05:00 PM

    @ WWH 317

Linux and Mac OS X bring the Unix world to personal computers. Unix-like operating systems are widespread in colleges and universities, industry, and government.

We will learn the basic commands to navigate these powerful systems through the simple command-line interface available on all Unix-like operating systems, even Mac OS X.

We will briefly go over processes, memory management, the file system, and input/output management, all features of the most common OSes, including Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

This hack day is for those with no or very little experience using the Unix command-line.

Optionally bring a laptop to follow along with the tutorial. A Unix emulator, Cygwin, is available for Windows, which we can install during the event. On Mac OS X, install XCode, Apple's development platform, http://developer.apple.com/technologies/xcode.html. Linux should already have gcc installed.
