Simple Bubble Sounds

What is going on here?

There are three tables showing a range of different sounds obtainable from the fairly simple vibrating bubble model presented here. Depending on the radius, each bubble will have a definite frequency and damping rate. The larger the bubble radius, the lower the frequency and the longer the sound. The sound generated assumes that the listener is under water with the bubble. This is pretty different than being above water and listening to bubbles breaking and the such. Some people think some of these sounds are like a babbling brook, and some are like what you'd hear in a submarine. They're interesting, in any case.

Each element in the table shows a little graph and a link called "Spectrum". The graph shows the distribution of bubble radii used in generating the sound, and if you click on a graph you'll hear the sound. Each sound is two seconds long.The sounds are .wav files, so your browser should be configured to launch something to play them.

Each sound in the first table has 25 bubbles per second generated randomly with radii about a particular mean and with a particular standard deviation. The second table has 150 bubbles per second and the third has 300 bubbles per second.

Clicking on the "Spectrum" link will pop up a separate window with the spectrogram of that sound. The spectrogram shows the frequency content of the sound as time progresses. Time is along the bottom in seconds and frequency is vertical in cycles per second (Hz). Large amounts of a frequency show up in red, lower amounts yellow and green, and silence is dark blue. If the number of bubbles isn't too high, you should be able to see individual bubble on the spectrogram and their different frequencies.If you keep the spectrogram window open then other spectrograms will load in the same window.
