Foveation Theory


What is foveation?

It is possible to foveate in a more general sense. Below is the image foveated at two gaze points. Incidentally, this occurs in nature (eagles have two fovea in each eye).

Formulation

We are interested in the mathematical formulation of foveation. Our paper at the 1997 ACM Symposium on Computational Geometry describes the algorithms and implementation. The mathematical theory of foveation is investigated in our paper Wavelet Foveation and in Ee-Chien's thesis.

Foveation Demos

We wrote a little java demo to illustrate the kind of bandwidth reduction that can be obtained by foveation. Note: the demo may be slow in part because the reconstruction is done by an applet.
