Computational Design with Nonlinear Constraints

Industrial and architectural designs processes must respect both performance requirements and fabrication limitations, but have to offer the maximum possible creative freedom. In our work we model this situation as interactive exploration of constraint spaces guided by fairness energies, and implement it by an iterative Newton method made feasible by conversion of polynomial constraints to linear or quadratic ones. In this talk, I will demonstrate different applications to computational design problems which are difficult to be solved before, such as meshes which obey side-conditions originating in both geometry and statics. Another instance is developable surfaces including curved-crease origami. I will also illustrate extensions of the constraints and regularizers, and share my outlook for future work related to computational design.

Speaker Bio:

Chengcheng Tang is a graduating Ph.D. candidate in Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences (AMCS) at the Visual Computing Center (VCC) of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). He also received his master's degree in AMCS from KAUST in 2011. Prior to joining KAUST, he received his bachelor's degree in Materials Physics from Jilin University in 2009. Chengcheng is interested in Applied Geometry and Computational Design. He has published in Siggraph, Siggraph Asia and ACM TOG. In his spare time, he enjoys sports, travel and music.
