Generalized Tangent Vector Fields for Fabrication-Aware Geometry Processing

Speaker: Daniele Panozzo, ETH Zurich

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1302

Date: April 13, 2015, 11:30 a.m.

Host: Subhash Khot

Synopsis:

The advent of digital manufacturing is increasing the demand for advanced design tools that make the designed shapes physically realizable. Tangent vector fields play an important role in these tools, in addition to being at the foundation of many computer graphics algorithms, including texture synthesis, parametrization, deformation and remeshing. In this talk, I will present an algorithm for computing these fields at interactive rates, while following user-defined directional constraints: compared to existing techniques, the presented algorithm is guaranteed to find the optimal solution by minimizing a convex quadratic energy. Tangent vector fields enriched with additional properties have immediate practical applications in cultural heritage and digital manufacturing: singularity-free fields can be used to digitally restore damaged historical documents, curl-free fields are gradients of global parametrizations, which can be used to design self-supporting masonry buildings, and conjugate fields naturally represent planar tessellations, which are ideal to design glass and steel buildings.

Speaker Bio:

Daniele Panozzo is a senior postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich. He obtained his PhD from the University of Genova in 2012. He has been a visiting researcher at the University of Maryland, the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (NYU) and ETH Zurich. His research interests are in digital fabrication, geometry processing, architectural geometry and discrete differential geometry. Daniele’s doctoral thesis was awarded the EUROGRAPHICS Award for Best PhD Thesis and his work has been covered by Swiss National Television and various national and international printed media. He is leading the development of “libigl”, an open-source geometry processing library that supports academic and industrial research and practice. Daniele will be awarded the EUROGRAPHICS Young Researcher Award in May 2015.
