Synopsis:
To design a system is to manipulate the invisible. We write code to manipulate data, but rarely see the data itself. We design circuits to manipulate voltages, rarely seeing the voltages. We construct equations to manipulate values, rarely seeing the values. And so on, through every form of engineering.
This talk will demonstrate new interactive representations for systems which make invisible concepts visible, and offer powerful means for understanding and manipulating the system's behavior.
Speaker Bio:
Bret Victor (BSEE Caltech, MSEE Berkeley) invents tools for understanding and creating systems. He has designed experimental UI concepts at Apple, interactive data graphics for Al Gore, and musical instruments at Alesis. He's responsible for "Inventing on Principle", "Learnable Programming", and everything else at worrydream.com.
