Colloquium Details

Just Causes or Just-So Causes

Speaker: Bud Mishra, Professor of Computer Science & Mathematics, NYU

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1302

Date: February 13, 2009, 11:30 a.m.

Host: Dennis Shasha

Synopsis:

In this talk, I will present a model of causality that is based on the work of various philosophers, but primarily by Suppes and Mackie. I will also show how this model lends itself to algorithmic implementation, as it builds upon probabilistic temporal logic (PCTL), model checking (MC), empirical Bayesian approaches to false discovery rate control (FDR), etc. Examples from biology, neuroscience, finance, and web applications will illustrate how we hope to exploit this technology. This is joint work with Samantha Kleinberg.

Notes:

In-person attendance only available to those with active NYU ID cards.
