A Mobile Ecosystem for Faster Web Access in Developing Regions

Speaker: Yasir Zaki, NYU Abu Dhabi

Location: 60 Fifth Avenue 527

Date: May 14, 2018, 11:15 a.m.

Host: Subhash Khot

Synopsis:

The web in developing regions is plagued by several issues: i) poor network infrastructure ii) web pages have become extremely complex, iii) web access from mobile devices has increased significantly, and iv) content providers often do not optimize their content for mobile access. All of these issues lead to high page load times and poor performance. In this talk, I discuss some of these issues and challenges, and propose the vision for a new mobile centric ecosystem. This ecosystem introduces three innovative concepts: an advanced web caching solution, an enhanced and easy to deploy congestion control protocol for cellular networks, and a web specification language that simplifies web pages. The proposed ecosystem enables faster web access and attempts to solve the connectivity problem for the next four billion.
