Here are the instructions for downloading JDK (Java Development Kit) and the Kawa IDE (Integrated Development Environment).

The JDK bundle contains among other things, the java compiler (javac) which produces java bytecode. It also contains the java interpreter (java) which executes the bytecode, i.e., runs your program.

We say that Kawa is a "thin layer" above the JDK. This means that it does not contain the compiler or the interpreter (it points to JDK); but it will enable you to compile, debug and run your programs by chosing menu options. For instance, if you make a compilation error, Kawa displays the error messages in a separate window. When you double click a given error message, Kawa will point to the offending line in your program. This is very helpful, especially for long programs.

DOWNLOADING THE JDK BUNDLE

Its best to download the JDK first. It is free.
  1. Go to the javasoft URL:
    http://www.javasoft.com/products/jdk/1.2/download-windows.html
  2. At the bottom of the page go to 1. Download JavaTM 2 SDK v 1.2.2_006 for Windows 95 / 98 / NT 4.0 (Intel Platform) and click One large bundle (~20MB) and then click the continue button. IGNORE EVERYTHING ELSE.
  3. Click the button to accept the licensing agreement.
  4. On the next page click the first button FTP download from java.sun.com: The system will automatically choose a directory for you for the download, or you may choose your own.
  5. After some time (it may take up to 1.5 hours) the download is complete. Then after closing all applications, go to the jdk directory or the one the program setup for you, and click the jdk-1_2_2_006-win icon. This will automatically unzip the jdk bundle.
  6. Follow the wizard instructions, clicking next and yes when appropriate; also choose the desired directory and hit save. Finally click finish.

DOWNLOADING KAWA

The Kawa people allow you a 30-day trial period. So the downloading is free; but you will have to pay $35 as a student to use it after the 30-day trial period . Payment can be made by either check or credit card. Upon receipt of your payment, the Kawa people will send you a key and a code that will enable you to use Kawa after the trial period. More about that later; first, we describe the download.
  1. The URL for the download of the Kawa IDE is:
    http://www.tek-tools.com/kawa/userinfo.htm
  2. After filling in the info and agreeing to the license agreement by clicking the appropriate button, a new page will appear.
  3. In the middle of the page click on the Kawa Full Install: link and download.
  4. At the bottom of the next page you will see the link for the download of kinst41a.exe This is the first download option and its category is Full-Single File. IGNORE ALL THE OTHER DOWNLOAD OPTIONS! The system will automatically choose a directory for you for the download, or you may choose your own.
  5. After some time (it can take up to an hour or so) the download is complete. Then after closing all applications, go to the appropriate directory (it may be Kawa4.1a) using Windows Explorer, and execute kinst41a.exe by double clicking it. This will start the setup program. Click the next buttons. When the blue screen appears, click OK and yes.
  6. After the installation is complete. The option dialog box in kawa appears on the screen. The directories tab is selected. In this the jdk directories tab is selected. Hit the ">>" symbol at the right of the java bin directory slot. This will allow you to select the proper directory by hitting the path button. In mine the proper directory is C:\jdk\bin. Yours may be C:\jdk1.2.2\bin. . If the option dialog box does not appear, open kawa and select Customize/Options/Directories and procede as per above.
  7. To compile and run a program, use the "Build" menu.
